I'm sure we all want clean healthy hair and scalp. Personally, I love the way my hair and scalp feels after I shampoo… clean and itch-free! However, sometimes it seems like shampoo days come and go and I wait longer than I should. Then the itch comes, along with the build-up.
I'm not the one that puts a ton of product on my hair so I don't usually have a problem with my hair collecting excessive debris. I also don't put greasy products on my hair so there really isn’t a chance for build-up to form on my hair strands, but it can happen.
Build-up on your hair usually comes from a product you are putting on it. I work on loose natural hair, relaxed hair, and locks. And if you have locks you must be extra careful about what you put on your locks. Loose hair is more forgiving, but you will need a clarifying shampoo to rid your hair and scalp of bad build-up. Relaxed hair will go limp and become hard to style if build-up forms on the strands... it will weigh the strands down. With all hair types, dirt, debris, scalp flakes, lint, etc. will grab on to the stickiness of the hair to create build-up.
Build-up also results in clogged hair follicles, hence retarding hair growth. If trapped tight in the hair and close to the scalp, it may become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, makes your hair dull and can weaken hair strands.
The best way to prevent build-up is to regularly cleanse your hair and scalp. It is not healthy to avoid shampooing your hair for over 3 weeks. I always suggest at least 2 weeks, but even better if done weekly.
Another preventative practice is to not use products that have the tendency to create stickiness and greasiness. SOME products with petroleum, mineral oil, waxes, and thick butters can be heavy. If you choose to use these products, make sure to use it sparingly and/or when hair is wet or slightly moistened with water.
I've seen where conditioners (when left in the hair) do similar problems. If the directions on your conditioner does not say you can leave it in, then it was not formulated or meant for you to leave in. I have seen conditioners that was left in the hair cause the hair to look very dull and cause build-up.
If you already have build-up on your hair, you will need to use a clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo. I use sulfate free shampoo on my own hair and on my clients, but once I see the thick white residue/ build-up, it's time to bring out something that will cut through all of that. Have you ever shampooed your hair and saw a white, slimy/slick film on your hair? Yeah, that's build-up. It's time to come clean! You may have thought that not shampooing will cause your hair to grow faster. I hope after reading all of this you can see why this is so not true. Hair grows best in a clean and healthy environment. Think about it, how does does dirt and gunk create a clean and healthy environment for hair to thrive?
Let's recap. Build-up happens easily when:
1. You don’t thoroughly rinse conditioner out from your hair.
2. You use products containing a lot of sticky, thick, ingredients such as waxes. petroleum, heavy thick butters, and mineral oils.
3. You don’t cleanse your scalp and hair often enough.
4. You over apply product, putting product on your hair more and move over a long period of time without shampooing in between.
A clean head is more likely to be a healthy head, so keep it clean ladies!
